Paint A Perfect Smile

You broke my heart and six months later I forgave you and let you back into my life. Then you left me in ruin a second time. Now you’re back begging for forgiveness again. I can’t do it. I just can’t. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. S.R.

Paint a perfect smile
Straight onto my face.
Wash it off good
Don’t leave any trace,
Of our happy times
The days we shared.
Hours of togetherness
Back when we cared
But we lost touch
My hand slipped from yours.
We went our ways
And closed open doors.
Then times got tough;
I needed you.
My heart was empty
My sadness grew.
I silently wept
As you left me there
Lost and alone.
I just can’t bare
Another lost heart
Or even more crying.
I need someone here
To do what you never would
Paint a permanent smile
The way you never could.

You Proved Me Right

I barely knew you when I caught you lying the first time. Later came many more untruths I knew were white lies, but never said anything. I always suspected you’d hurt me in time. I just hoped some how, some way you’d prove me wrong. But that’s not what happened. T.M.

We don’t always love what is good or
who is good for us. With frightening frequency
we fall in love with things that damage our life
and people who tear us to pieces.
James Browning

Scariest Thing

Maybe you got tired of me after years of marriage. Maybe it was the weight I gained after having the girls. Maybe it was our conflicting work schedules. Maybe we drifted apart over time without realizing it. Or maybe you’re a cheating liar I never should have trusted. R.S.

Loving you is the scariest
thing I have ever feared.
James Browning

Perpetual Sadness

I grieve the death of your love everyday. People I loved deeply have died. Bearing that grief was difficult, but it passed in time. Them being gone helped me accept their passing. Knowing you are still alive and doing well without me brings perpetual sadness. L.G.

Yet nothing can to nothing fall,
Nor any place be empty quite;
Therefore I think my breast hath all
Those pieces still, though they be not unite;
And now, as broken glasses show
A hundred lesser faces, so
My rags of heart can like, wish, and adore,
But after one such love, can love no more.
John Donne

A Heart of Stone

I loved you. I really did. When we were together you got all I had; everything. But all wasn’t enough for someone like you who is afraid of being loved; who thinks he doesn’t deserve it. Your heart is lost. Until you find it and learn to love yourself no relationship will ever last.  A.P.

Today I found a heart of stone
Just lying on the ground
I picked it up to hear it beat
But it didn’t make a sound.
I wondered who had left it there
Some poor heartbroken soul?
A heart that’s forgotten how to love
And turned as black as coal.
Today I found a heart of stone
A “You don’t love me shrine”
It hurts too much to pick it up
This heart of stone is mine.

From a Distance

Yesterday my Momma said ” Sweetie, if she does not care why should you? Don’t keep fightin’ for a woman who will not fight for you in return. Life is too short and there’s someone out there who will be just as interested in you as you are in her. Move on so she can find you.” R.B.

Cause I loved her from a distance
Like an angel watching from afar
I never had the nerve to mention
The fire burning in my heart.
I knew a boy like me
Never would’a stood a chance
So I did the best I could
And I loved her from a distance.
From the song “From A Distance” by Corey Smith

What’s Wrong With You?

For six months you were in love with me. Suddenly you left me flat. In the year since there have been two more. Is half a year the longest you can make a relationship work? What’s wrong with you? Why can’t you love and let yourself be loved longer? L.W.

My heart, it was a cup of gold
That at his lip did long to lie,
But he hath drunk the red wine down,
And tossed the goblet by.
My heart, it was a floating bird
That through the world did wander free,
But he hath locked it in a cage,
And lost the silver key.
My heart, it was a white, white rose
That bloomed upon a broken bough,
He did but wear it for an hour,
And it is withered now.
“The Prince” By Josephine Dodge Daskam

Still It Was Not Enough

For a long time I thought if I loved you with all my heart, you’d love me back. I felt certain if I showed you how deeply I cared about you every way I could, you would care for me as I did you. I gave you absolutely everything and still it was not enough to make you love me. N.V.

Love has become my sorrow
For you are no longer here.
I cling to your affection
Pulsing with the rhythm
Of your heart;
Gasping at the moment
I lose the steady beat.
Love has become my enemy
For you are no longer mine.
