Life Has Turned the Table

broken20heart1I thought you didn’t love me, or at least not enough to make a life together. So I moved on, searching for something I never found. I see now it was me who wasn’t ready to commit to you when I had the chance. Interesting how life has turned the table on me. J.M.

Sometimes life
has a cruel sense of humor,
giving you the thing
you always wanted
at the worst time possible.

Remember

broken20heart1I’ll never forget:  driving from the airport after not being together for weeks; the gift of yourself with a bow in a strategic spot; a French maid costume surprise; the noisy headboard the first time we made love. I smile to recall sweet memories only death can take away. C.K.

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann’d:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
“Remember” By Christina Rossetti 1830–1894

Never Known a Sadder Time

broken20heart1On the floor I sat by the side of the bed trying to not disturb your sleep with sniffles coming with my tears. I’ve never know a sadder time, but will always be grateful for the undying love in my heart at that moment. It was then I learned how much I could love. B.R.

Just because someone
doesn’t love you the way
you want them to,
doesn’t mean
they don’t love you
with all they have.

Pretend We’re Half Our Age

broken20heart1It’s okay to fantasize about seeing you again. There’d be no harm in reminiscing together the love of a lifetime we shared long ago. Through laughter and tears we could resurrect the young man and young woman as we once were and pretend we’re half our age. L.U.

Beloved,
In what other lives or lands
Have I known your lips
Your Hands
Your Laughter brave
Irreverent.
Those sweet excesses that
I do adore.
What surety is there
That we will meet again,
On other worlds some
Future time undated.

Rushing Out Like Water

broken20heart1Sometimes I want to throw open the gates holding back my feelings and let them come rushing out like water through a dam break. But I can’t because you belong to another. Instead, I’ll keep hope strong and bide my time till you’re in my arms again. D.W.

Collect The Pieces

broken20heart1The bad thing about my broken heart was I handed out pieces to anyone who pretended to love me. A little here; a little there, cast away, till all my heart and  hurt were gone. Then you came back. Now I’m trying to collect the pieces and glue them back together. N.C.

back together
is the one
who broke it

Traces of Love

broken20heart1I still find physical traces of you: a music tape you sent me mixed in with others, photos on a hard drive saved from an old computer, a big Valentines Day card packed away at the bottom of a stereo box. It’s been over 20 years and you’re still very much with me. M.E.

Faded photograph
Covered now with lines and creases,
Tickets torn in half
Memories in bits and pieces,
Traces of love long ago
That didn’t work out right.
Traces of love.

No Matter How Long

broken20heart1How long should I wait for the love of my lifetime to return? A year? five years? Ten? Twenty? That and more I’ve been waiting for you and didn’t know it. I tried substitutes but none worked for long. I’ve never felt as safe anywhere as I once did in your arms. C.B.

If I die,
I will wait for you,
do you understand?
No matter how long.
I will watch from beyond
to make sure
you live every year
you have to its fullest,
and then we’ll
have so much to talk
about when
I see you again…

Because You Love Her

broken20heart1My friend said, “you really love her, don’t you?” An answer echoed in my heart before the words “very much” fell from my lips. My friend responded “she’ll probably break your heart into a thousand pieces”. I said “I know, but I’m willing to take the chance she won’t”. L.A.

No matter how many times
I tell you she’ll break you heart,
or how many times she does it,
you’ll never give up.
Why you ask?
Because you love her.

Silver Lining of Abundant Joy

broken20heart1If love can be measured by depth of feeling, I’ve known great love, but it brought grief almost as great. As my sorrow over time proved the test is what remains once love is lost. Within my pain has always remained a left-behind silver lining of abundant joy. V.B.
